Default Carb question

There is a metal tube that is above the carb that goes to each head. From there, there is a seperate nozzle that a rubber hose attaches to that goes down and attaches to the bottom of the bike. I realize that this is an air/drainage deal; my question is this, a buddy of mine has another filter attached to this hose and mine doesn't. Why is there a difference. My bike is a 2000 Heritage and his is a 95 or 98 Ultra Classic.

Default RE: Carb question

This is the crankcase breather system. Normally the oil vapors from the crankcase are routed from the metal tube that is above the carb into the back of the air breather, and then back through the carb into the engine to be burned. Sometimes this causes some unconsumed oil to leak from the airbreather cover onto the engine, and right side of the bike. For this reason people just route the breather fumes to the atmosphere via a tube that runs from the metal tubing to just below the frame on the bike. These tubes come with a small breather filter that can be seen under the frame on the right side.

In your case someone has just routed the breather fumes to the atmosphere without the benefit of the filter, or there was filter there at one time, and it has been removed. You should be able to find a replacement at any aftermarket HD parts dealer such as Custom Chrome, Drag Specialties, etc.

By the way, this system is only found on upgraded aircleaners, such as Screaming Eagle. The factory system does not need the mod.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Bill
