The best measurement I can get on my 07 Softail Custom is 10 13/16" or 27.5mm from the outside of one fender strut to the outside of the other. Or inside one side of the sissy bar to the inside of the other.
The only way I could get a more accurate one would be to pull things apart and it wouldn't change it more than a 1/16" one way or another.
Hope that helps you out. Post pics when you get it done, I'm curious to see how it comes out.

The Customs sissy bar is unique to that model, true. But all three of the 200mm tired bob tailed Softails (Night Train, Standard, and Custom) share the same rear fender and strut setup.
They differ in color (fenders) and finish (struts) but unless I'm very badly mistaken, they are all dimentionally the same and completely interchangable.

I think he's looking for something more exact - meaning taking into account the thickness of the plates themselves as bolted onto the bike, spaced from the struts, curvature for fender, etc, etc.

I have an 07' Custom as well, so can't help you, but I think I know what you mean. Just curious though - would this be the inner dimensions of a "fixed" side plate/sissy bar, or for the inner dimensions of a "detacheable" side plate/sissy bar? Reason I ask is, the docking hardware protruding from the struts probably makes the detacheable a little wider, so want to make sure you get the correct measurements you're needing.

And on that note, got any ideas to make a back rest/sissy bar that would fit the 06'/07' softail detacheable sideplates - and would allow the 07' Customs to use their stock seat? Needs to have the correct angle for the back of the seat, and the correct height for the 2 studs on the back of the seat to bolt through (as the fixed one currently does). That's my project for this winter. I want to run a solo most of the time, but want to keep the stock 2-up seat and use it for passenger travel (wanting detacheable for ease and speed of changing between the two).

Right now, if you want to run a detacheable back rest on the Custom's, you have to buy a different 2-up seat and bolt it to the fender and buy a different back rest assy..........I like the stock seat, trying to make it work.

If the sissy bar attaches to the outside of the plates then all you need do is add the thickness of the plates (times 2) to the numbers I posted to find out the size your looking for.
If the sissy bar attaches to the inside of the plates, then the number your looking for is what I posted minus double the thickness of the sissy bar.
