looking for directions to change out the starter clutch on my "95" fat Boy
does the oil tank need to be removed?
Can the clutch be repalced on the lfet side primary?
thanks
I just did mine about 3 months ago. The oil tank does not have to come completely out, but you have to remove all the mounting hardware and a couple of the oil lines so the tank can swing out a bit. This is not as simple or easy as an oil/filter service so if your in doubt, get a service manuel or find a trusted mechanic. I could go step by step here but I did not take the fastest route.
Be very careful with the plastic drain tube from the oil tank to the oil tank drain point, it is easy to damage.
Primary cover has to be removed anyway so this gives you open passage to the clutch, if your doing work on the clutch.

Just replaced my starter a couple of months ago. My indy swore my tank didn't need to come out but, there was NO WAY the starter was coming out w/out the tank coming out first. It seems that the bottom recess of some oil tanks are different. Not sure of the year break on that though. Once you get the tank loose, just go ahead and pull it. Make it easier on yourself.
Get your fluids gathered and do a service while you're there. You're pulling the primary cover anyway. It's a piece of cake once you have access. lol If you don't already have one, get the manuel. I do remember I needed (and borrowed from my indy) a long allen wrench (1/4" I think) to get to the mounting bolts. Don't forget the blue loc tite.
Can the clutch be repalced on the lfet side primary? Not the starter clutch.

Oh, forgot to mention. There's a 3" or so long, small diameter bolt (I cannot remember the name, maybe 'pilot' screw?) that gets torqued from the primary side. I snapped it off using the shop manual's torque rating and had to take everything back off again. Luckily enough snub was there, allowing a pair of Vise-Grips to attach and remove. Watch those torque ratings!
