Default resale

How much did the 07 lines hurt resale of older models, went to dealer just to get idea of what i could get on trade, have a 05 deluxe, paid 19.000 plus change, have put little goodies like new pipes-down load, crome etc, kinda shocked when dealer said 12.000. I realize will loose some of its value, but is this just me or anyone else get hit in the face like i did.

Not really sure how the resale value will be affected. We probably won't know for a little while. However, this is not the first time HD has changed engines, etc. They went from the 1340 cc Evo to the 88" TC about 6-7 years ago. Resale value still stayed up there after that, even for the Evo's. There will always be a market for used Harley's IMO.

I also think that in respect to the bikes that got a major make-over (i.e. Fatboy), there will be people who want either the older look or the newer look, so that will be a factor as well.

Overall, I think we will be okay. Don't ever expect to get market price from a dealer. If they are offering $12K, you can sell it yourself for $14-15K.

good luck,

Private party sales always net more, as long as you have the patience.

I sold my 05' outright. Got exactly what I wanted out of it. The dealer did offer me $4,000 less than I got (for trade). Took about 5 or 6 weeks, but I had a bottom line, advertised it for a little more, and was "talked down" to what I really wanted to get out of it. I think trading is foolish personally. A little patience pays dividends. Same with cars and trucks - I rarely trade-in at all any more...........

Exactly,
If you aren't burning up to sell it and you can be patient, the right buyer will love your bike at your price. If it's sound with no issues and clean, you'll be just fine for resale. My old basketcase 1990 went to the showroom on consignment because there was an opportunity there.. They didn't have any bikes, so why not. So we priced it reasonably, roughly what I had in the purchase, minus my service expenses, and it lasted all of two weeks. So a private sale where you do your own advertizing will just take longer, and you get to deal with a lot of lookers and guys wanting to browbeat you on price. Hold your ground and show them the door if they're just trying to lowball you.. Keep this attitude in mind.. "This is a Harley! Want to pay low dollars, go get a Hardly." Ebay may or may not be a good source for market street value though.. I've seen a lot of variance for comparable bikes. I actually found the old 90 on ebay. If you go that route, it's the quality pictures and solid "no-bull" write up that makes the difference.

It is the same in the car world, your bike ain't worth ****, theirs is worth alot. When your bike is theirs, it is overnight worth alot. They are there to make as much money as possible.[:@]

If you can, go private party you'll get more $$. Dealers are going to mark it up a couple grand at least. Some dealers will do let you sell it at their dealership for a cut of the sale price or a flat fee, usually around $500. It gets you great exposure and you can ask right around what the dealer will ask for it so you can maximize your sales $$ .
