just playin with ya,,, & i guess you could call it a push per se, but it's just a slight amount of pressure forward on the grip will grind your boards pretty easily

NJ MSF coarse teaches at as "pressing a turn". I guess it might become to confusing any other way for a beginner - press right for a right hand turn etc. 
Interesting fact in that a very common accident among riders is running off the road in a gradual sweeping left hand bend! Excess speed, crowning of the road and lack of control can be a bitch! A simple push of the bars couldn't hurt!

Push or pull will yield the same results however most of those in the know teach effective counter steering with a push on the handlebar.
Me? I tend to push but will sometimes find myself pulling...not sure why.
