NJ MSF coarse teaches at as "pressing a turn". I guess it might become to confusing any other way for a beginner - press right for a right hand turn etc.
Interesting fact in that a very common accident among riders is running off the road in a gradual sweeping left hand bend! Excess speed, crowning of the road and lack of control can be a bitch! A simple push of the bars couldn't hurt!

ya, i've been the bass player for these guys for the last six years, we play all around the bay area, & played up in Reno during Street Vibrations last fall
