I have an 09 night train with 18,000 miles on it. I think I have a Cam bearing that is going out. I get a not so nice whirling sound from the front of the motor, noice seems to increase with engine speed. Has anyone had to deal with this before?
You should post in the Engine section to get some good response. I'm not sure what a bad bearing sound would be like. I swapped my bearings out when I did my cam. While you're in there, assuming this is the issue, I would install some bolt in cams. Might as well do it now, and bring your bike to life, and not worry about it. Torrington's are the one's you need. Good luck.

Sounds like the primary chain. Mine whir's a little too, and increases with motor speed. You need to try and isolate just where in the engine the noise is coming from. Why do you say it's "not so nice"? Did it just start happening, or could it have been happening the whole time and you just noticed it? Have you changed the type of oil you used (to a synthetic), especially in the primary case? Although it's equipped with the automatic adjuster, you still might want to check to make sure it's doing it's job and adjusted properly.
+1 on the primary chain. Not necessarily too tight because I think that they have auto adjusters by your year. The plastic follower is what I always suspected was making the noise... mine's been doing it for 40k.
Thanks for the info! I did change the oil, but Ive ran Syn3 since the 1k service, and I change the oil at the required intervals. Since its still under warranty, I am having the dealership check it out on next Weds. The sound is pretty noticible, if the wind carrys the exhaust noise away, its all you can hear.
Got the bike out of the dealership today! The main primary bearing was going out. The dealership also found metal shavings in the tranny and replaced all the gears! I basically got a new tranny. It was all covered under warranty. Thanks for the help from earlier posts! I am interested to know if anyone else has had this problem with an 09 softail?
I did have syn3 in the tranny and primary. I am a stickler for changing the oils aswell. I asked what may have caused it and the dealership it was a defect from the factory. So we will see how much longer this will last.
