Default 88 to 91 FXST conversion

I am considering installing a 91 tannie in my 88 softail, and I don't know if it will work. I have to buy the parts to test this. Everyone tells me I can't do it but can't say why. I don't want to change my inner primary, starter, etc. but hear me out. Of course I have to include the splined clutch assembly, I've checked my (88) trannie shaft (external bearing surface) to be 1.27ish going through the primary bearing/seal, the 91 trannie guys tell me theirs is 1.265 which tells me we are likely measureing the same shaft diameter, both clutch assemblies are 66 tooth, if they are the same overall dimensions (starter lines up??), why can't I install a 91 trannie and clutch in my 88 primary and frame?

Anybody tried this or has better knowledge?

If your 88 has the solenoid sticking out of the primary like a 4 speed, it will not work. The starter area on the trans case is completely different. 86-88 were bastard years and the inner primary for those years is impossible to find. You may be able to pull the trap door and swap the gears into the 88 case...but I am not sure about that...you would be much better off to scour Ebay...and find a used 90 up primary from somebody that installed a belt drive...good luck

Default 91 trannie guts into 88 trannie case

OK, it's a long shot but does anyone know if the 91 guts (gears, shifters) will go into the 88 case? In case you didn't read the other stuff, yes I know the shaft is splined and the other stuff, got that covered, just didn't want to change the hole primary if it's not necessary.
Thanks for any advice!

I have an 88 softail. Is your ultimate goal to replace the tyranny or to get rid of your tapered mainshafr with that ridiculous keyway putting your power to the ground? I spun off 2 of those keyways after going a little bigger on the motor and a wrench friend was able to upgrade me to the later style splines mainshaft/clutch setup. If that is your goal,it can be done.

Might hit up the Evo section as well. They know their Evo's.
