I have a 96 softail. it has never shifted into 3rd 4th or 5th gear. When i bought it it was wrecked and i took everything off the frame to straighten it. I must have put a thrust washer in incorrectly because when i took it apart a second time i found a thrust washer (out is printed on concave side) as the first thing placed around the mainshaft as it protrudes from the inner primary. i do not believe it is on the diagrams showing the mainshaft or the clutch assembly. All the appropriate diagrams, pic of the mainshaft protruding through actual primary and pic of the thrust washer are listed below.
does anyone know for If the washer fits on the mainshaft anywhere within the primary case. It sure does not look like it from the diagrams from the harley 95-96 evo /big twin parts manual. maybe it belongs on the right side of the bike near the end of the pushrod. it is too small to fit on the shaft that the rotor and stator go on.
i must have put the washer on the wrong place since the tranny would not shift into 3rd fourth or fifth. shift forks and gears showed no damage. perhaps the washer put right next to inner primark case put an undesriable force or spacing on the mainshaft. Bruce Ayway i bought another tranny to upgrade to 6 speed so i want the correct spacing on the mainshaft so the same thing does not happen with the new transmission . Bruce
