So if I got shorter bolts rather than longer - might it work with out the passenger pillion????

Sorry it took me so long to respond. I have been at the hospital for the arrival of my 8 lbs 11 ounce baby boy. He is our first and I am already trying to talk my wife into buying him his first Harley. I'll just keep it in the garage for him. She isn't budging yet.
Congrats on the new riding partner, and good luck convincing the wife about the "extra" bike. I fear you'll need a lot of it.

Email reply from firehouse is that it can not be used with just the solo. Here is my question and their answer:

Can this be used with out the rear part of the stock seat? So it would kinda look like a mustang Solo? Thanks!

Mike,
this backrest requires both halves of the stack seat.

Nice bike & great User Name!!!

Anyway, I guess you answered your question about using the backrest without the passenger pillion.

The install was easy, the bracket runs down between the driver and passenger seat and bolts to the same two holes the pillion bolts to. Included in the kit are two bolts that are about 1/4" longer than the stock bolts to accomodate the extra with. The fit is tight, but that is good because there is not rattle or movement when installed on the bike.

The stitching is great, the grain of the material matches the stock seat well.

I will post pics ASAP.

Out of all the items I have bought for the bike, this is in the top 3.

I took a short ride on it a few days ago and it make the highway pegs more comfortable and really makes the uncomfortable stock seat quite tolerable. Next I will explore how to put gel inserts into the stock seat.

WARG - Congrats on your first child!!!! A nice bike and baby boy - life doesn't get much better than that. Regarding your question about the gel pad in the stock seat, check out www.americanasoftseats.com. I sent out my stock Deluxe seat and they took off the cover, put in a gel pad at just the right spot, covered it with memory foam, then the stock cover back on. Looks exactly the same, but feels A LOT better than stock!! No butt or back pain anymore.

cjgrog,

that's a cool site. I may look into that. I don't plan on buying a new seat b/c I already have the seat in my sig, that I use most of the time. I was just looking at making my stock seat better so that when my wife rides or when I go on long trips I can use the backrest.

With the backrest and $149.00 mod to driver and passenger seat, that is only $263.00 for a revamped long mileage seat as opposed to buying a new seat witch would run between $400.00 and $500.00

Bikebehaviorist,

I don't think it will work without the pillion because the backrest leans on the pillion a bit due to the angle of the bracket. If you don't have the pillion I think the bracket may go too far back and possibly make contact with the fender. I'm just guessing, I havn't tried it myself.

Hmmm...exactly what I was thinking. I am just wondering if there will be enough room to slide the passenger pillion under the seat when mounted. I have the detachable passenger pillion kit (51658-97).

I might just buy it and try it out ... if not, just put it on Ebay

So what is the verdict. Do you like it or what? Was it worth the scratch?
