I guess Drag is claiming the holes in the tanks haven't changed since 1992, so either the part is defective, or they are wrong. Quote from the parts manager at my dealer says drag claims fitment is "hit or miss"
I dont think they have a single flushmount cap that exists outside of the whole LED kit, but even if they did, it probably wouldnt match the Drag dummy fuel gauge insert (which I haven't tried to install yet)
I'm going to take another run at this as soon as wifey gets home, its possible that in my haste I cross-threaded it. I f that cap fails, I'm going to try this one from HD: http://*******.com/3fuye9z, along with the dummy gauge from Drag (assuming it works, havent tried yet). At bit more expensive, but still less than the LED flushmount kit from HD (which will fail, and I dont like they way they look anyway)
It would be unfathomably stupid if the Blackline tank was different from all the other tanks, but nothing surprises me any more.
The saga continues. It seems like all of my minor mods become sagas. <sigh>
The dummy gauge seems to fit just *ok*, not great. In order for it to be snug, you need to keep the old gasket that comes off the old gauge. The trim ring, therefore is not completely flush, but it looks ok. Assuming I can get a Harley flush gas cap per the previous post, it should be fine.
Also, I could disconnect the connector under the tank just fine, but removing the connector from the wires on the gauge side so that you can pull the wires thru the tiny hole in the tank to remove the old gauge didn't go so well. I helped my neighbor put the HD flush mount kit on his bike, and these wires slipped right out of the connector, no problem.
Well, mine of course would not budge. So I snipped them figuring I could re-splice them later if I needed to.
Now here's the kicker. After I put the dummy gauge in, I turned the ignition on, and it seemed fine, showing a full tank, which it was.
Then a few minutes later, I did the same thing, and it displayed an empty tank and a LOW RNG error message.
I'm not completely certain whats going on, but I guess I'll call the dealer tomorrow.
dam man...this is getting to be a soap opera. I really hope it all comes to a happy ending cause I was really looking forward to following your lead. Please keep us up on the next chapter!

Definitive answer from HD corp tech on this. LED kit is the only way.
"They need to realize the gauge needs to see a certain resistance to shut the light off. in the svc man diag section for fuel gauge is states what resistance specs are needed to illuminate the light. i know of no way to shut off unless gauge is properly hooked up, or if he knew our gauge /ecm engineer that could reprogram it for him .... but we know that wont happen! "
He references the low fuel indication, but I assume same is true for fuel level, it works on resistance.
And you already cut the wires...right? Ouch. I hope it's not too hard of a fix?
Well this sucks. I'd love to find a way to get that to be flush mount. Maybe I'll just talk to the service guys over at HD and see if they can find me a broken LED flush mount that might come in off a bike. I don't need/want one that works, but if that's the only think I can use to fill that spot, then I guess I just have to wait until I can find a broken one.
