Default Help adjusting shocks preload

Adding some preload to the rear on my 01 Deuce. I have the factory shop manual and the special tool. I did what the book said, loosened the nut and turned the special tool about 2 holes and tightened the nuts. When I look at it, it seems like the canister should be held still while the special tool backs out the end a couple holes! I can't tell any diference in the ride so I didn't go enough or must hold the cannister while adjusting. Thanks for the comming advice. Rick

I thought so too about the canister. You loosen the lock nut and turn the whole thing. If you look at the back end of the shock opposite the lock nut you can see how far it is moving. I have the lowered shocks on my bike and it is easier for me to see how far the shock has moved by looking there. Just make sure that they are both adjusted the same distance.

If you only turned it two holes you won't notice much of a change. Look in your book and adjust to the your weight. Mark the shock with a piece of tape or marker and where the manual says to turn the shock they mean 1 full turn not just a hole or two. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help. I adjusted up to 360 degrees of rotation. The shinny strip on the rear wheel end looks to be the same on both shocks. Should get a few nice days again next week so I get to try it out. I've gained about 20 pounds since 2001. I don't want to spend $ for new ones until these are shot. Thanks Rick

You should be all set. I think it was 2 full rotations to full hard.
