Ok, did an oil change, filled the filter and soaked. Once complete, started the bike and looked at the oil light. After about 5 seconds, things started sounding a little scary and shut the bike down. Waited and started again, and the light went right away.
Question, I will assume there was an air cavitation issue at the filter. If true then I will assume that little or no oil was circulating in the engine. How long can the engine run in this condition without damage?
Wonder how long dealers let it run in this condition?
Bike runs fine now but I wonder if I damaged anything. I use Mobil 1 synthetic.
Did not hurt it. Just filling up the lines. There's plenty of oil on things especial cold. I been doing this 40+ years. Been inside engines many times. In a Late model 350 Chevy engine right now. Had a blown head gasket on the back right cylinder taking water in the oil. (fancy all al--do not over heat them) Never ever bothered to fill a filter. Harley's oil pump force feeds to the filter. The pump is duel stage . (light is between pump and filter) . The other stage about 20% large returns oil from the engine sump to the oil tank. I assume there is a wire screen in the oil tank and this is all the protection the oil pump gets.
