Default side-mount plate side l/r ?

Ive always seen side mount plate holders on the primary side of the bike. Is there a reason, if it fits and doesnt get in the way of the exhaust, that it could be mounted on the right side of the bike? Im wanting to get a swingarm bag, but the plate holder is in the way. Thanks.

Mine can be mounted on either side
I mounted mine on the left side because I felt it's easier for the LEO to see.
When on the super slab, I'm rarely in the fast lane.
If he can see it, he's less likely to pull me over because he couldn't see it.
