dealer says its a 5/16 24x7/16 button head screw. it hold the front and back fork tins together on my fatboy front end.

problem is I cant find them anywhere. they are the button head screws that fasten into the side of the forks at the top holding the front and the rear tins together for a fatboy/ heritage

Have you tried your local True Value/Ace Hardware stores?
My local one has a good selection of bolts in chrome or stainless.

I would try 5/16 24 1/2 only 1/16 longer.

A pair of pliers and a grinding wheel will fix them if they are still too long.

Try these guys: http://www.allensfasteners.com/detai...oduct_ID=10277. They had the best prices I could find for chrome bolts and they shipped same day. Even the shipping was reasonable.

As far as I can tell that bolt for stock tins is Harley P/N 3538, Screw, 5/16-24x1/2 for all Fat Boys from 1995 forward (don't know about before that).
