I picked up 4 qts synthetic motor oil to switch over and proceeded to change the oil as outlined in section 1.4 of the Harley service manual. With the remote resevoir I was a little skeptical all of the oil would drain but I read this several times and assumed the rest would come out when I pulled the filter. Well buttoned it up and low and behold 3 qts was all it would take. So I am missing a qt somewhere. I since noticed what appears to be an allen plug on the rt side bottom of the case. If this is pulled will hte 4th qt come out? Or should this not be removed? I looked again in the manual and did not see anything on this in the maintenance section.
THE NATURE OF THE BRUTE IS TO ADD 3 QUARTS, RUN IT , CHECK IT WARM ON THE KICK STAND. I HAVE NEVER USED MORE THAN 3 QUARTS NOR HAVE I EVER ADDED ANY BETWEEN CHANGES. THAT'S ME!
I put 2 qts + 22-24 ozs (leaves about 10z ozs in the 3rd bottle). It puts it about 3/4 of the way up on the safe zone on the dip stick. I also sit on the bike and hold it straight up when draining the oil.
You do not mention what year but with a little age you got to shake it to get the last drip.? Mine take a little more then three with filter. Do not take remove any case bolts. Just the plug in the cross frame brace with the hose that goes up to the bag.

Mine takes just under 3 qts when the oil is changed. Just make sure you don't overfill it cause it will blow out the filler when hot. I make sure it's hot when I change the oil and also stand the bike up when draining the old oil.
When you change the oil, you're draining the oil in the oil tank and the filter, but not the quart that's still in the bottom end of the engine. If you wanna do a complete oil change, you need a scavenger system or a homemade version of it.
There is no way there's a quart left in the sump. A couple table spoons at best. So.... yes you're not changing all the oil, but if your changing it often. Your fine. Drain oil bag, change filter, and dump in 3 qts of your favorite. Done.
