I just picked up 97 fat boy with only 8000 miles been sitting a while but started regulary (so I was told). the motor sounds fine at high rpms but at idol it gets a pretty good knock on the top end and gets quieter and louder as I sit there. cams lifters and pushrods have been changed years ago. Any ideas I changed the oil to synthetic. no difference
When I hear "started regularly" it makes me wonder, did they just let it sit and idle for a while, or did they actually go out and ride it. Sitting at idle for a while in my opinion is worse for the engine than just letting it sit, because of the condensation created in the engine without it getting hot enough to burn it off. Condensation can get on bearing surfaces and cause pitting. I hope you find the noise without it being too big of an issue.
Funny. First thing that popped into my head was Billy Idol.

Motor has 8K miles and has the cams, pushrods and lifters changed? Could be the nature of the beast. What cam was put in? The higher the lift/duration, the more valve train noise you're going to get. HD V-Twins are noisy to begin with, especially the Evos because of the angle of the valve train. If it changes with RPMs, maybe the lifters aren't pumping up or they are leaking down too fast. Other things is, what is the idle set at? Most people like to set it too low because the bike sounds better and it just sounds too fast at 1000 RPM. Unfortunately, under 1000 RPM, the motor, especially the valve train, doesn't get much oil. This could be causing the excessive noise also.
Syn oil is actually thinner than its equal weight dino oil, so U will have a little more lifter noise with it at idle.
list to other Evos and see If Urs is louder than them, Harleys are not quiet to begin with and sometimes a noise get louder if we try to hear them just because we are listening.
It was noisey before the oil change.thats why i tried that first. This is my fourth harley and the knock is definetly louder than any of the other bikes ive had. I can try uping the idol see what that does. andrews pushrods, jims lifters tappet assy, ev27 camshafts andrews. what about carbon on cylinder heads? Anyone try the water trick in the intake
If the Andrews pushrods are adjustables, you might want to do a quick readjustment on them. Easily done, and it will rule out the knock coming from a loose pushrod (although that usually sounds like more of a 'ticking' than a knock.) Don't rule out bad gas, especially if you're not running 93 octane. Timing too advanced will also cause a knock if you've changed anything there (and you might want to verify timing just in case). If you have a mechanics stethascope, or even a long screwdriver, piece of a broomstick, etc, you can put one side to your ear and the other to various areas of the motor to try and pinpoint where the noise is coming from.
Short of that, and especially if the issue worsens, you might have to pull the heads to see what's going on in there...
