I'm glad I'm not the only one. My experience is the same, but I was waiting for you to give him the answer, so I had my pen and paper ready lol.

Nawlins,
Maybe if you posted a picture it would help us out.

Nawlings

Here is a Harely exploided view or a two up seat showing screw and retaining parts with part numbers. Keep in mind I don't know what you ride, my only assumption is that it is of the softail family.
Cheers!

Maybe whatever seat you have on there now has a captive screw, but that's not a Harley standard. A 1/4-20 knurled thumb screw can be found at any hardware store in many finishes from stainless steel to chrome.

I know what you are tyalking about, the black metal tab with the screw built in. You can get them from HD. There are 2 lengths, one fits earlier models (2000 to 2006 I think, not sure about older than 2000) and the other fits newer models. The black metal part on the newer one is about 1/2 to 3/4 inch longer. When I had to replace my rear fender due to an accident, the new fender required the new longer one. The part is about $18.95. Just make sure they know exactly what you want, the local shop ordered me the wrong part at first.

@shinybike!
YESSSSSSSSSS!!! That's what I'm talking about. Tried contacting a couple of HD shops and was getting the royal run-around. That's why I came here. I'll have to knuckle under and have them install it, anyway! But, that's exactly what I was talking about.
Thanx, to ALL!

Interesting. I've got 3 stock HD stock seats and none of them have a captive screw on the tab.

Glad to help. Wish I still had my receipt so I could tell you the part number. The captive bolt come already installed on the black tab, they do not sell the bolt part separately. If you can get it ordered it just attaches with 2 bolts under the rear of the seat.

Get a fancy one that says Harley for $20. That is what I did as I like the thumb screw that is easy to remove.
