I have an '08 Heritage Softail. I was on a trip recently and I started having dead battery issues and the lights came on for engine and battery. I brought the bike to the dealeship and was told that both the stator and reg. are bad. Is this somewhat normal for a 3yr 47,000 mi. bike or am I getting the run around. I do have ESP so I don't have to invest a lot into the repair except downtime which sucks considering the weather finally got better.
One can't say what might be "normal" for any bike with whatever mileage. Anything can go wrong at any time on any bike. I would get a second opinion if I were you..
When one fails it often kills the other. You can tell pretty quickly without a multimeter if the stator is gone. Pull the derby cover and stick your nose close to the opening. If it smells like a barbequed cat your stator is gone.
I had my stator go on my 06 Heritage at 20K and the bike was only 11 months old. The bike now has just under 75K and haven't had a bit of trouble. As far as I know, it's a crapshoot when it's gonna fail.
Just got my 08 Heritage back from HD installing a new stator. I'm at almost 80,000 miles on it. My original stator blew at about 20,000 so this is the 3rd one.
I bought an '08 heritage in Florida last fall and on the ride home to N. CA I lost the stator and regulator just outside of Reno. Sure glad the bike had an extended warranty...
Got towed back to Reno, they had me back on the road with new parts in 4 hours... kudos to Reno HD...
Sounds like this shouldn't be much of a surprise, and I agree Chromejunkie I've found most things on this bike are a crapshoot.
The one thing I will add is that I started having the trouble after riding in rain, not your normal light rain. It was the heaviest rain I had ever driven in, I know now I had no business riding in it and I should've stopped for 1/2 an hr.
Mine went belly up on my 09 Heritage at about 8000 miles. Dealer said they had new upgraded stator and all was covered by warranty. So far bike has 24000+ and no problem yet.
