Default Intermitent Shut Down while Ridin

06 Night Train,EFI with V&H pipes. No other engine add ons. About 8,000 miles. Shuts down about every 2 or 3 hours of ridin. Usuallly about 15 min after stopping and then starting it up. Some times it kicks back on, without stopping. Other times I pull over and turn it all off and then it starts easily and runs great. There isn't any warning. Justs acts like I'm out of fuel. The dash lights work and the "check eng" and/or "low fuel" lights come on when it dies. I cleaned the kill switch with canned air and a little wd. I'm going to check the battery terminals but don't know where to go from there. Any ideas or suggestions? Thx and Keep em upright.

Check your ECM plug - take it out and reseat it using dielectric on the plug. Could also
be battery ground problem - use a alligator clip wire from battery negative to the engine
and see if that changes anything. IMHO.

OK. I cleaned the terminals and reseated the ecm. I'll check that out and then do the clip. Been stormin here. So, couldn't check it out yet. But I'll keep ya posted. Thanks again for the help. Someone said it could be a gray relay for the fuel pump in the fuse box or a weak battery. I'll try em one at a time til something works.

If it were the battery it wouldn't start. Bad grounds are notorious for creating intermittent
problems. Bad / wrong spark plugs and plug wires can create problems with the ECM's ion
sensing knock system - Champion RA8HC for $1.55 each is same as stock gapped at .040.

If the times at when the bike quits has anything to do with how full the gas tank is, it could be a pin hole in the gas line from the filter to the bottom of the tank where it goes out to the injector. On my 07 Softail Heritage that happend. The line rubbed on the inside of the tank making a hole. When the gas level dropped below the hole it would shut off but due to gas slosh it would start up. It took some calling around to H-D shops but finally I talked to a mech that had heard of this happening. It's rare but possible. Also, and real important--make sure you change the fuel filter at 25 or 30K as H-D says. I did mine when replacing the gas line. It was full of black crap.

Had a friend with a Buell that did this and it was fixed by re-seating all the relays and fuses.

I would have guessed that the battery cables were not tight enough and had built up some corrosion. Do you still have the problem?

Seems the most common cause for this problem after seeing it come up over the last few years is a bad ground.
