I have a 2000 soft tail night train when i am riding the bike for about 20 to 30 mins on the highway when its real hot out the electrical starts to cut out which then makes the motor start cutting out I took it to harle they could figure out what was wrong but at night when it cools down a bit no issues anyione have any ideas please
Sounds like the coil is breaking down once it gets hot... Try swapping out coils, they gotta get good and hot for a failure to show up when coils start to die. Had em drive me crazy more than once.
What TalonIILM said. If you have a meter, you can check the coil before you go out and buy a new one, but you have to check it after the bike cuts out on you. Go here to read an explanation of the process but double-check it in your service manual.
A 12 year old bike could have any number of issues causing it to cut out after a 20 to 30 minute run.
Test the coil but also be concerned that the cam sensor and the ignition module typically only fault when heated. Using a heat gun you could expose the cam sensor (under the derby cover) and heat it to see if it faulters while the bike is idling. Same goes for the ignition module. Coils go bad but odds are better for it to be the module or sensor.
You could even have something as simple as a loose connection that is effected by the heat of the engine. Or simply a wire broken inside of the insulation that only stretches and breaks contact under the operational heat of the engine.
