So it is time to get new tires again and I want to try something new. I did a search but couldnt find much recent info on tires. I do a fair amount of touring, city and getting into some mild twisties all but city is usually two up riding. So what would you guys recommend. I would like something with decent life say 10k. Have gotten 15k out of two stock rears and 30k out of the front (which should have been changed long ago but was waiting for the rear to go). Thanks
Rich
Do you want longevity or traction. I wish Dunlop made the E3 tires for the Softails. People run Avons, but the most popular seem to be the (various) stock Dunlops or the Metzler 880s.
on my 4th lop HD 150-80-16 rear..
Got 10k-10k-11k with them.. could have probe gotten 1k more just I don't like riding when they get to low..
Got 20k on the front..
U didn't say what Yr U've got so I'am only guessing.!!!!!!!!!!
On the rear next time I am ordering the Elite 3's there 160-80-16 is a little taller but narrower than the Lop's 150, and the front is about 1/4 shorter..
Lots of members in here report there great on tar snakes and grooves, plus while some are saying 15k or mire is normal wear.
I also get my tires from Dennis Kirk and have our local Indy install them. that saves me around $150 over what the dealers want.
Last time (2 yrs ago) I checked with a dealer they wanted $480 for both tires installed.
Ordered same HD lops from DK for $210. and Indy charges $120 to ride in and He does all the work..
So $480 vs $330.
The Elite 3's will be about $60 higher the stock lops.
I've run the stock Dunlops, switched to the Metz's, big difference in handling. I got about 10,000 miles avg out of a rear.
Switched to the Dunlop Elite 3 MU90HB-16 the last time due to the price of the Metz's. I talked with the Dunlop rep at a show and he told me this tire has a dual compound for wear and mileage. Handles the rain and grooves great. I am at 16,000 miles currently and ready to order a new one for $122 from Dennis Kirk.
200mm Rear limits your choices. Very low milage on stock Dunlops, previous owner probably ran them low. They seem to break free pretty easy when wet (may be 200mm - not sure) Just purchased front/rear 880s from Motorcycle Superstore for $301 delivered. HD Dealer agreed to drop wheels/change/bal/stems & disposal for $85. Pretty pleased with overall cost, We'll see how they perform and how they last - interesting, recommended pressure for 880s is 42/48. That tells me they are built very different from other tires, but I don't know if that is a good or bad thing. LOL Cheers, Kevin.

Ours was $80 two yrs ago if I brought in the tires...BUT that's $80 per tire.. So its 160 plus tubes, about $50. So it was $210 for both front and rear just to R/M/B/andR.
