Thanks I just bought it and waiting on the list of mods, the first time it made the noise it was like a click then it started , so I turned it off and did the samething the next time. I'm going to warm it up and check the oil and add if it needs it but then im going to take it over to my local bike machanic for a good going over.

Just bought her and she runs great ....... Today I took a 2 hr ride and stopped to get a drink ..... got back on her and it wouldn't start made a nasty noise and kinda backfired ...I felt the motor and it was super hot ...I let it cool down and it was fine ..... What can I do to keep it cool ?
Anything I ever bought used, the first thing I alway did was check the oil, if OK ride her home and then change out the oils....

I've had mine back fire on start up maybe 6-8 times after turning her off getting fuel.. usually let her sit a few seconds then start her up.

As far as hot,, How hot.. do U at least have an oil temp gauge so U can at least compare it. (like the oil temp was 250*, or it was 275*)??.. because A air cooled motor will be hot..

205/215 is a fine temperature for your bike. The click sounds to me like a possible corroded starter relay or loose battery connections or may be even a battery that is tarting to go south. Tighten up those connections, charge the battery (with a charger, not a tender) and see what happens. Also, if the relays are corroded clean and repalce or get a new one. They are cheap.

It sounds like the oil is low although you are supposed to check it on the sidestand, not vertical.
On a 2000 Softail. the manual says to check it while the bike is vertical.
