I have a chance to purchase a 2005 Softail Standard at a dealer. It has about 8500 miles. Looks like its in great shape. Bike has the stock seat and back rest . How much is this bike worth. I can also purchase a extended warranty for about $1000 for two years.

Weasel,
If you buy a new '07 you get the larger motor,6 speed tranny, automatic two year warranty and no miles on the bike until you fire it up.Not that I woldn't buy a 2005,I just wouldn't pay a penny over $10,000 for it and maybe not even that much.Used bike prices seem to be down lately.
A backrest did not come stock on the 2005 Standard. Since it's coming from a dealer you'll be paying too much for this bike regardless. If it's in MINT shape and if it has some add-ons (pipes,AC,chrome, etc.) it might bring $12,000. Forget about paying for the extended warranty. Do what you will but if I were in your boots I would look into buying a new '07 bike...you'll get the free 2-year warranty, bigger motor and 6-speed, 200 rear tire, and you have no chance of getting someone else's stripped threads/bad maintenance/rode hard put away wet bike and the #1 reason to buy new...with a brand new bike the history will be all yours. Once the price haggling, financing, "dealer prep", and sales tax dust settles you should be able to get out the door of a stealership with a brand new box stock '07 Standard for around $16,500 or less.
