I was just thinking about this the other day. My friend came over around 12 midnight with his new gixxer 1k, I took the fatboy. There were a couple times where we did some tripple digit pulls and I thought hmm if I see a cop am I gonna run or stop? If I was on my gixxer i'd have no doubt.
But do they work well on bikes?

I used to have one on my sport bike years ago. I had it hard wired to the fuse box and an ear piece in my helmet. It paid for it self several times over. It worked really well. Now that I am a Fatboy I don't feel the need for one. I generally cruise at or a little above the speed limit.

Where i live the speed limit is 30-35 on most of the roads so its really easy to exceed the speed limit.

I was a Trooper for 28 years. I truly enjoyed meeting someone with a detector. Ultimately we would be discussing the Detector. But if it saves you one ticket it was worth the cost. However, realistically you can't expect a break from the cop.

The Stalker Radar would pick up the "fastest" vehicle (as a secondary radar...) about 2 miles out... and KA band detectors can't detect until right on top of the cruiser... I just had to look very far out to find the right target. Then when using my laser/lidar I had a range of 6,000 ft... Just sight through the scope and wait... Measured down to the exact inch and converted it to speed. My experience showed me the detectors typically just showed the driver their speed when they just got measured (which was obvious by the sudden huge braking...) Harder to reduce the ticket when the player brings a few extra aces to the table.

I still subscribe to the "10 MPH over the limit and you should be all set..."

I don't need one because I don't speed.
Well, sometimes when no one is around...

Nope. I'm enjoying retirement, not really in such a hurry to get anywhere.
