I was a Trooper for 28 years. I truly enjoyed meeting someone with a detector. Ultimately we would be discussing the Detector. But if it saves you one ticket it was worth the cost. However, realistically you can't expect a break from the cop.
The Stalker Radar would pick up the "fastest" vehicle (as a secondary radar...) about 2 miles out... and KA band detectors can't detect until right on top of the cruiser... I just had to look very far out to find the right target. Then when using my laser/lidar I had a range of 6,000 ft... Just sight through the scope and wait... Measured down to the exact inch and converted it to speed. My experience showed me the detectors typically just showed the driver their speed when they just got measured (which was obvious by the sudden huge braking...) Harder to reduce the ticket when the player brings a few extra aces to the table.
I still subscribe to the "10 MPH over the limit and you should be all set..."
i dont run one on the bike, from my experience there is not a speeding ticket on the bike i cant beat, up to 100mph. been there done that, got plenty of frustrated DA's to prove it. in a car different story. from ym experience, and the three city cops who works for me part time. i have been told that the radar will no get a fix if the vehicle is rapidly changing speeds, ie, accelerating or decelerating. in the car i set the cruise at the speed limit, then use the throttle to run the speed i choose. detector goes off, back off the throttle, no brake at all. the car rapidly slows (manual trans) and holds at the speed limit, the radar never gets a solid lock. been working for me.
as for how to beat them on the bike, wont post it here, but a little research on how the radar works, will do wonders for a persons court case, lol
I speed all over. There is not a day I don't whack the throttle on my Fatboy. Of course, my last bike was an 08 Gixxer 1K. While I think it would be hard for me to have a Radar on the Fatboy, I have a Valentine one in my car, and it has kept me ticket free in my vehicles for over 5 years. The last ticket I got was 3 years ago on my Gixxer 1K. I know the Radar can not beat instant on, but If I am running and the cop is toggling his Radar off and on, The Valentine will pick it up more than a mile away.
That's good info, bro. I've been torn on which one to get. I don't really speed on my Fatboy, but my 911 Turbo, well, that's a different story.
I don't see the need for radar on a Harley or cruiser....now on a crotch rocket, YES....it's been my experience that cops in my area RARELY pull over cruiser style bikes because they are "usually" older people as people that ride crotch rockets are "usually" younger more daring people....I have LOTS of police and DPS friends and they all tell me the same thing...
Valentine 1 and Legal Speeding's Helmet Assisted Radar Detection (H.A.R.D.) System. This combination had saved my butt and paid for itself many times over when I rode my Duc.
...detector goes off, back off the throttle, no brake at all. the car rapidly slows (manual trans)...
It's getting a helluva lot harder to get a stick these days unless you're running econobox or an all out sports car. Even trucks - whether an F150 or Silverado 1500, it's slush-box only. Dakota's use to come with 6 speeds & 8 cyl, Ranger with 5 speed & 6 cyl. Getting sick and tired of the least common denominator bs at the cager dealers.
I'm not ranting, just disappointed. But I'm happy to be rowing through the gears on my Heritage all day long
I have several cop friends who ride, one is even an accident investigator - all say cruisers aren't what they're looking for, and 8-10 over isn't what they call speeders, unless you're in heavy traffic where you should be running with the pack.
That said, they will ride faster than we do most times, since they can, and it's a blast to ride WITH them (sort of a license to boogy).
Most roads have me comfy 5-10 over, as that is what we'd generally drive if there were no speed limits posted.
A report on roads that had speed limits raised showed that over 80% of the drivers still did whatever speeds they did before, even if it was slower than the new limit. People will drive what the road calls for, but if they put the speed limits there, the majority would be 5 mph over that.
