I have a new 2011 Fat Boy with nearly 1,000 miles on it. I'm taking it in for the first service next week sometime. I have a couple of questions I'm wondering if anyone has a comment.
1. At 500 miles I drained the oil and put in Syn3 and a new oil filter. I drained it for quite a while and only got 2 quarts of oil out. The manual says it holds 3.5 quarts. Could I have burned 1.5 quarts in 500 miles or could the dealership have failed to fill it properly before I took it home?
2. When I come home to the garage I always have a strong gas smell around the bike. I've never had this strong smell from any of my other bikes. Also, I'm getting 26 MPG, which is far below what the manual says and far below what my previous Road King with a 103 engine got. The Fat Boy is the 96 engine and a smaller, lighter bike so I would think it would get better than the 50 MPG I got with the Road King and the 103 engine.

*Capacity* is 3.5 quarts but there's easily a half a quart that doesnt come out of the system via the drain unless you use some sort of scavenger puck system to get it out, so generally when you refill you should only put 3 quarts in.
Its possible you burned .5 quart in 500 miles, but I would think that would be a bit high.
I'm not sure but if the bike sat for longer than a few minutes after getting it up to operating temperature, the longer you wait somewhat less will drain out the drain hole, that could account for some as well
I have a 2004 Fatboy and the maximum amount of oil I can add after an oil change is 2.5 quarts and that includes a couple of ounces I pour in the new filter before I screw it on. It would not be unusual for a brand new engine to use a little oil during the break in period, so you are probably fine.
Your mileage seems really low to me. Unless you are riding the crap out of the thing, which seems unlikely since it is brand new, it should at least be getting mid 30's for mileage on average and high 40's at highway speeds. Even when i am being cruel to my bike, it still gets better than 26MPG.
