Hi all, I bought first softail about a month ago and I love it. 2003 Heritage Classic. It is stock mechanically. It seems to be stubborn starting even warm. I usually have to give it a little choke and it turns right over. If I dont it will backfire and take multiple tries. Is this normal at all? Bike runs fine without any problems once it starts. I think the bike did sit for a while, carb probably needs cleaned I'm guessing. Thoughts?
I have put about 1300 miles on it in the last month and now after the bike warms up I hear a slight squeak/ tapping. Never did it before this week so I dont think it was like that when I got it. Ideas? People keep telling me it could be a lifter. I know its hard to say without hearing it but I'm just looking for some general ideas.
My last question is what repair manual would you suggest? I looked at the HD ones but it looks like now they split mechanical and electrical into two manuals. I was considering a Haynes. Clymer only appears to have a digital edition.
Get it right and it will start fine. Would need to here your squeak/tap. Locate it with a stethscope. I personaly think if you plan on keeping it and doing you own work, get the Haynes with the thought of getting the real Harley service and electrical diagnostic. May be able to catch them on Ebay for an 03. Forum really frowns on putting picture from manuals on here so you need your own.
