I have a 2001 fatboy big twin with a lot of performance mods. I had the primary cover off to replace the ring gear and noticed that the chain seemed like it had a lot of stretch in it.
I dont know what is acceptable but the deflection from level is about 1" to 1.25". The tensioner is still taking up all of this slack but Im not sure how much is too much.
Also, if you replace a stretched chain do you also have to replace the drive and driven gears?
You do not have to replace the gears if you replace your primary chain. The rule of thumb on replacing the primary chain is that if you can adjust the chain tight to specs (or your auto tensioner does the same), it doesn't need to be replaced yet. HD manual says basically the same thing.
