Default Symptoms from primary chain

On a 2006 Heritage Classic, what symptoms or tale tell signs do you get when the primary chain needs adjusting? Would adjusting chain alleviate some of the clunk when shifting into first?

A very loose chain will "slap" the inside if the primary cases when downshifting.

Why not simply adjust it every 5,000 miles and forget about it? It's not hard.

Gear clunk has nothing to do with primary chain adjustment. Heavy transmission oil will quiet down some of the gear clunk. Your primary doesn't have the inspection cover for the chain does it? Like stated above you can hear chain slap the cases when it is really loose. I have only had to really adjust the chain every 20,000 miles or so but I ride em like I have to work on em.

I check my primary chain every 5k when I do maintenance. I have the inspection cover on my bike so it makes it easy to do. Best thing for you is to check your chain. For my 2000 Fatboy, it calls for 5/8" to 7/8" upward travel when cold. I usually set mine at the midpoint........3/4".

Adjusting the chain is a 10 minutes job, if it needs adjustment. 5 minutes, if not.
Why living in doubt?

Default Chain Adjustment

I may be mistaken but I am pretty sure all the 06 and newer bikes came with a automatic chain adjuster built in to the primary. It may need to be replaced if the chain is that loose but you would have to take the outer primary off to figure that out. The older bikes had a little take off window to inspect the chain tautness. The newer primary covers have the indention for the inspection window but there is nothing to remove.
The clunk is typical for a Harley trans but can be lessened with a good clutch adjustment.

Thanks. There is no slapping of the chain against the case on my bike. It has the inspection cover, but I don't believe 06's came with the automatic adjuster. I will check the chain nonetheless.
