I hesr while adjusting the primary chain you need to have about 7/8" free play.What I need to know is if that play is measured from the bottom of the chain at the shoe or at the top of the chain by the top case cover. thanks. Skip
Measured by the top portion of the chain where it lays across the sprockets, it should push upward 7/8" when cold.
Easiest way is to use a pencil, wooden stick or similar - insert vertically thru the inspection cover and mark it, just as it touches the chain. Then, push upward on the chain until it stops and mark the stick again. Measure the distance between the 2 marks and that's your travel.
