I haven't needed one yet, but many of my friends have the HD installed and no complaints on it. Just depending on the fitment (brackets and stuff) there is not much science in an oil cooler, don't dig too much. Get the HD if you really need it.
HD redesigned the adapter used in the original Softail oil cooler kit just over a year ago. The original kit used an adapter made by Jagg. If you chose to buy the HD kit make sure it is the new kit, which uses the new adapter. They sell the new adapter separate for those who had trouble with the Jagg adapter.
If you think you need one I would get the HD unit.
There are others out there and they are generally cheaper.
But IMHO an oil cooler is not something that you want to get penny wise and pound foolish with.
Save that for the inconsquential trim pieces that won't "hurt" expensive mechanical parts if they go wrong.
Good Luck and post pics, be nice to see what one will look like on a real bike.
I have a Jagg, they make HD's units. It mounts between the downtubes and are a necessity in hot climates (JMHO, that's debatable). Sounds like you want one and aren't looking for yes or no though. Go with an HD or Jagg, same thing. I used SS hoses, SS clamps, it's trick. Dropped my operating temp ~25 degrees. I never go over 225 now no matter where I am.
