Default I must be getting old....

because I just made my best mod to date. Got rid of my V&H Big Radius and installed an OEM exhaust system. A bit nervous when I fired her up for the first time. From what I've read, I was expecting it to sound like a sewing machine or worse yet, a Gold Wing. But I was pleasantly surprised by the quiet rumble. And it actually feels like it has a little more pep (maybe from the cross connection pipe???). The best part, the pipes cost less than the new gaskets and 02 plugs I bought today from the stealer. They look like new takeoffs and I found them on Craigslist for $25.

OEM Pipes - A Craigslist find for $25. I think these were new takeoffs. Look, no carbon at the tips.

Left the heat shields off for now. I'm sure the bolts will need a little more tightening after my next ride. Next to go will be the spike. Would like to put on one of those Roland Sands air cleaners.

To each his own. Loud pipes may save lives, but they also set off car alarms and annoy the neighbors, especially at 6:00 in the morning.

Must say i like the look of these stock exhausts a lot more than the shotgun exhausts that came from the factory with the Deluxe.

Yup, I changed bikes, the Road King had Rinehart Tru-Duals, I liked the sound but it was a little loud.
My Street Glide has Screaming Eagles which follow the EPA noise standards, they are noticeably quieter but still have a nice note. At this point in life a little more piece seems to please me and lets face it now, "it's all about me"!

Take it from a member w/tinnitus - your ears will be better off for this upgrade. Nice CraigsList find & maybe wrap the headers for a tad different look. Good deal for you!

I put 35k on the 08 flhx with stock pipes and liked it. Heck even wore ear plugs on long ride/trips. Getting old should be getting wiser and not concerned about what others think.
Approval is over rated.

I left the stock pipes on my rocker because I liked the look, but I had them set up with a new baffle by American Custom Exhaust (site sponsor) so it runs better and has just a little more good rumble but noway near offensive, inexpensive also. My brother has the same setup on his heritage and loves it. Easy to change to other baffles if you want also.
On the aging thing...I'm on the "more experienced at life" side also, but...FIGHT IT ALL THE WAY!!!!!! My better half has been asking me when I'm going to grow up for 36 years and the answer is always the same (with a big grin!) - NEVER!!!!!!! Not going to happen! Ride safe!

Looks good, I have a set of V&H short shots on my 09 and I absolutely dislike them (hate them). I thought about doing the same as you till I can afford to buy samson duals...the short shots sometimes make my bike sound like a jap bike at certin RPMs.

+1 on the wrapping Pipes. Also remove the cats if injstalled in the fwd end of the mufflers(if installed) for a little more growl.
