Default Used or 06 NT

So I've been doing a ton of research on these and my first thought was to get a used one. After going to several dealers and researching online, every dealer in Colorado has marked up every bike $3-4k over value for USED bikes. Example: 1999 NT 3k V&H pipes for $15k. I about flipped when saw that. I asked the sales rep why the huge mark ups and this is what he told me:

We're out of bikes so all the dealers have been buying bikes from auctions and other dealers and we're having to pay close to what we're selling them for. Infact the same bike above was bought from another dealer for $14500 he said. You could imagine the look on my face. So he was honest with me and said the best thing to do is to buy new/order an 06 and he quoted me an otd price of $16k or just under.

$16k includes all the dealer crap for a 06 NT when msrp is $15k. I thought that was pretty good or at least fair. Not a deal or anything but hell the new bike is a much better deal than a 6 year old bike when you look a tthe whole pkg. So does anyone have any tips, suggestions, laughs or anything for me that I should look out for, etc.

I just bought a new 05 FatBoy. I paid MSRP + $199. adm. fee and they gave me a $500 gift ticket to buy some goodies with. That was at Zylstra Harley-Davidson in Ames, Iowa. Good luck in your search for that bike.

Only thing I can say of these "trusting" dealers is why would they pay more for a bike than they are worth from "another" dealer to turn around and mark it up even more and expect to sell it. It would be different if they had a buyer for that particular bike ,then they MAY spend more for it than wholesale, but I even seriously doubt that! They just don't spend the market value for a bike let alone even the wholesale price when you trade it in if you do. They usually try to undercut wholesale by a few $$$ and we should believe they paid over retail to sit on the floor?

Besides there are MANY 05 bikes at most dealers yet! More mark up on the 06 = more profit for him.
Don't be afraid to shop around and even do a bit of traveling to find your ride, they are out there at normal prices, heck I have a great bike for sale below!

The days of buying a new Harley today and selling it tomorrow and making a profit are gone. The supply has caught up with the demand in most parts of the country, I believe.

I think it was just plain dirty dealings when they extended the 03 model year into 04 for many months, what kind of business is that?they flooded the market with them.

Look around in the paper...I just bought a 2001 NT in Vegas for $10,500 with 4,400 miles. I had Hooker pipes, an upgraded NT seat, $60 service manual, helmet, and some chrome upgrades. I just waited till the right one came along at the right price. I wanted a bike that if I needed to sell, I wasnt upside down because of some ridiculous Markup of $4-6,ooo. Good Luck.

When I bought my 05' night train I shopped at EVERY harley dealer in wa, or, and Id. I found a huge difference in price between them all. Here was the biggest difference:

Portland OR- 05 vivid black carb version for 18,500 (what!?)

Yakima WA- 05 black cherry pearl EFI for 16,155 (yeah!)

I could go on and on, but I was shocked that the portland dealer wanted that much for a straight black bike that was carb. they told me carb is going to be hard to come by in a few years so they are marking those up.

anyways, just shop around man, good luck with your decision. when I was shoppin I was gonna by used at first to save some bucks, but ya just don't know if the bike has been rodded on or what kinda problems you are gettin with it.

I just thought if I spent a bit more on a new one I would at least know if it got f'ed up it would be from me...
