2012 Fatboy. Do the rear turn signals have to be relocated in order to mount detachable back rest sideplates? If they do, where do they move to? Thanks.
I'll stand corrected if i'm wrong but if i remember from my 07 they are moved to the rear virtually at the end ....
They are not really moved. The housing is replaced with a smaller housing that may also move them out just a little. But they will remain in the same location.
If you need a pic, my Lo has the rear directional relocation kit and detachable sissy bar on it. Just let me know and I will snap a photo and upload it for you.

And...
Yes and No to your question. If you want to make everything fit together just right, then you will need the relocation kit.
On the other hand, some have modified the sideplates a little with a grinder and make them work with the stock signals.
Its really up to you. I opted to just get the relocation kit vs. taking a grinder to already expensive sideplates.
For the detachable brackets, the 2012 looks the same as my 08 and I installed my relocation kit. If you're a wrench-turner, it's not that big of a deal. It moves the turn signal indicators to the very rear of the fender support bracket. You have to remove the fender support bolts so just be careful you don't scratch up the fender while it's loose and flopping around. This link will take you to the relocation kit on the Harley website. http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/g...bmLocale=en_US You can click on the "download instruction sheet" to see what's involved. The kit fitment states 03 and later. It's also the same kit called out in the 2012 Harley catalog. If in doubt, call the dealer. There may be a different kit if you plan on using bags. Oh...and you'll also need to buy the mounting hardware, sold separately of course.
Before you go down to your local Harley dealer with a shopping list, I forgot to mention, I bought all of my parts on ebay:
-Backrest- 5 bar luggage rack w/chrome detachable side plates (private seller never installed)
-Directional relocation kit (new)
-Mounting hardware (new)
I paid less than half price for all of it. You do need to know exactly what parts you need and confirm the Harley part numbers with the sellers. Don't trust their fitment description. Just a suggestion...
Here is a link to a thread that shows how to do it yourself. It's about in the middle page of that thread and there are some pics. The only one that will know it was modified is you and the ones you tell. This is an easy mod and I wish I knew it was there before I bought my needless relocation kit 2 years ago. https://www.hdforums.com/forum/softa...ml#post8253605
Ditto on the grinding, EASY, and looks much better keeping the stock turn signal mounts.
I'm with you on the grinding option. A half hour of work and no one can tell it's been modified unless I tell them (and show them a picture of the stock side plate).
