Hey guys. new here so cut me some slack please if its been asked. I have an 01 fatboy with the phatail 240 kit on the rear. lately ive been hearing what sounds like a ringing or clinking noise periodically while riding. not often but enough to make me wonder if its alright. ive tightened all the bolts i could find that could make a noise but not sure where its coming from. it sounds like its coming from the left side, maybe towards the rear. it rings/clinks for a couple seconds then stops, more when i have my girl on the back and when going into some turns. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.
Welcome Jay! Mine was doing that too. It ended up being the drive belt slapping the upper belt guard. It took me a while to track it down. I put the passenger peg down one day and held my fingers on the guard and i could feel it slapping. I adjusted the belt and pulled the guard away from it and the noise is gone.
I was driven crazy when I switched from a yamaha to my Harley-Davidson Fatboy. There was a clinking sound that took a few months to figure out. It was small pebbles hitting the inside of the fenders. The V-star had plastic fenders so I did not hear the stones. Of course I would never go back to a metric scoot after owning this wonderful machine. Hope you figure it out.
Thanks guys. I dont think its the belt hittin the guard where the belt it properly adjusted. As for the rocks i thought of that as well where it doesnt happen often. Only think is should pebbles sound like metal ringing like a phone? Almost sounds luke gears meshing without fluid like metal to metal. Hmm ill have to look further into it. Thanks for the responses though.
I have the same issue. It started after I pulled the starter to put a new solenoid and starter clutch in it. I tried and tried to figure out what it was but no luck. I've got my motor out right now for a rebuild, so hopefully I'll have fixed the problem when I put it all back together in a couple weeks. Keep us posted if you get it fixed, cuz I drives me crazy.
Hey guys, i dont know if i founf it or not but i had a missing bolt on the horn mount where it mounts tio the engine head under the tank. i replaced it and took it for a quick ride and didnt hear anything but then again i dont always hear the noise. dont know if that missing bolt would make that type of noise. also, i foinf out that was the bolt the guys before me grounded the horn to and where it was missing the ground connection wasn't tight so maybe the horn? who knows..im going to try to take it out this week before putting it away for the winter. ill let you know if its fixed or not.
Take a look at your Gremlin Bell and see if you are scraping that in corners. I had a ringing sound and thought it was rocks from the front wheel hitting the frame tube. Nope, scraped half my bell off and could see where it was hitting the frame tube in the twisties....paul
