Default Gas Caps

New to the forum here and I have a question about gas caps on my softail custom.

I am looking to get a new set and see in the J&P cycles mag the sets only have the right side vented. Do both need to be vented caps or is one vented side fine?

Thanks in advanced.

Sorry but I may be ignorant about the model bike you have but isn't one side where your fuel gauge is at or does that not apply to your bike?

I think I might know what you are getting at. You might be wondering what to do with the gas gauge side of the bike since it doesn't have a screw in fitting. I was wanting to put on a set of matching caps from RSD on my bike. I was stuck but RSD recently came out with matching gas gauge side caps that press in like the fuel gauge. The question I have now is will my miles remaining counter still work without a fuel gauge attached to it.

Miles to empty should still work as it goes off of sending unit, not gas gauge I believe

Cool. Thanks for the reply. I might have to bump that mod up the list then. I like most of RSD's stuff but the caps are one of the few things that are actually affordable for me.

I have been looking at the RSD caps as well. I will probably go with the RSD gear black ops caps for my Lo. I think that their contrast cut caps are just a bit to much silver showing for my bike.

The Blackline doesn't have a gauge, so I can only use the miles remaining counter. Should work the same, assuming they are the same year.

I have just found that it won't work if you just remove the guage and put the dummy in its place

I had to remove the guage part from the original one & conect it back up. Then you can drop it into the space before putting the dummy cap over it

Hope this helps

I took the gas gauge off and made my own compression fitting. It works great. The only thing is the miles to empty function won't work. I use the trip meter and fill up every 150 miles or so. I think if I find the right resistance module I can get it to work. Oh yeah, your low fuel icon stays on all the time. I thinks it's worth it to get rid of the foul looking gas caps they put on.
