Default Advice needed for my recently purchased used deuce

Last friday I bought a used 02 Deuce for around $7600. Thought I was getting a steal. It was sold AS IS from a local dealer who did no inspection at all. Me, being the very inexperienced rider/dumbass, bought the bike. Didn't notice anything while riding it, thought it ran well. Well, I took it to a shop up the road to get all the fluids swapped out for the winter and he found metal shavings in the transmission.

We opened the transmission case earlier, hoping to find it was just a bearing, to find there was a lot more metal in the transmission. Long story short, I'm going to need a new transmission. Along with everything that comes with swapping a transmission, seals, there's another bearing thats bad, my belt possibly because the adjustment screw is screwed all the way in practically leaving hardly any play. We were thinking that maybe the previous owner swapped out the original sprocket and maybe we could just put a different sprocket on to fix that issue, but we aren't sure yet.

The bike "supposedly" has about 12K miles on it. The guy at the shop, who showed me the evidence, says if it really has 12K on it, it was a very hard 12K.

All together, it's going to cost me around $2000-$2400. I shouldn't have even spent what I did on the bike already. I don't have the mechanical knowledge to do this myself, otherwise, it obviously would be a lot cheaper.

What are your thoughts as far as what I should do at this point? Should I just cut my losses? Have him put it all back together, new fluids, seals and try to trade it in? Or do you guys think I should have it fixed? Is that a decent price?

WWYD?

Thanks,

Adam

Around this area, 9500 to 10k is about what an 02 would do. However, its up to you on which way you should go.

Are you saying that most deuce trannys wil go around 10K? That doesn't sound right.

I think he was saying that is what the retail value of the bike is , so if you have to put some money in it youre still kinda ok

If this bike was rode very hard for the first 12K miles, is there a good probability that something in the motor could be screwed too? Like I said, the bike seemed to run pretty well, but I'm also very inexperienced. I know a 02 deuce is worth more than 7600. Putting 2500 in it would bring me up to 10,100...which is still a pretty good price for a deuce I'm sure....any more advice?

Thanks

Go back to the dealer...
Tell them you didn't really like the way it rode... Not comfortable to you... Trade it back in... Make them give you 6500... Atleast. 6 and get something else... Never look back...

No he was telling you that you got a good deal..
I paid 11 for my 2000 deuce...

Maybe too much... Maybe not if you knew what was done too it....

But for the exact reason I just told you is why I got rid of mine

Lemon law, there is no way that the dealer didn't look at the bike when they took it in. Even though it was sold as is, they still have to let you know

Also I paid 9k for an 05 deuce with 6000 miles on it.
