My airbrush artist told me he had fixed a ton of bikes with a open belt drive,he said when you get them wet and start the bike it takes off ????
You mean the belt comes off? That is false. Anyway I have been in some good monsoons with those belt drives and have been in storms with my current belt drive. Water is not going to hurt these.
Here is the main reason why we get comments about belt drive failures. Unlike our wet enclosed set-ups (which are installed at a factory). Most open belts are installed by the do it yourselfer. Many of these are then installed incorrectly and that leads to problems. Spline's washing out on BDL clutch hubs (due to no or little loctite on the shaft), Motor nut not torqued correctly or no use of loctite, AND the biggest killer is impropper belt alignment which is clearly spelled out on the instructions. Also impropper motor plate alignment on EVO models. Lots of things can go wrong.
But if you do it right and save the beer until the end of the install. These things can last a long time. They are also a snap to maintain.
