The directions say on 08 and later to remove the rear axle and reverse the direction and install the 1 1/4" spacer between the frame and the mount. Im confused as the mount does now attach to the axle in any way shape or form. Anyone ever installed this on an 08 or later softail? Also, where can I find a T45 socket that is long enough to get inside the passenger peg to remove the peg?
You can get the long t45 at Sears, Advance Auto, or maybe even Lowes, but they may not be in stock.
The 1-1/4" spacer fits between the frame and bag mount (where the left side footpeg attaches) using the longer 3/8" bolt. It doesn't fasten to the axle. There's a pic in the pdf installation here.
Im pretty much screwed now, one of the strut/fender bolts stripped out. I have the detachable backrest/luggage rack hardware there so its not the stock torx bolt, its a chrome hex bolt. Hopefully wont have to buy a complete hardware kit to get that one chrome (longer than stock) bolt once I figure out out to get the stripped one out. Any suggestions?
Can't help you with that, though I'm sure someone here can. If there is locktite on the bolt I would use a heat gun on it before fooling with it anymore. Every little bit will help. Good luck!
Live and learn huh? Probably have to use some sort of easy out to remove it, but even then, can I get another chrome bolt like it without buying the entire luggage/backrest hardware?
Sorry to hear of your troubles. I never found an easy way to get stripped bolts besides drilling and using an easy out with a little heat and it's still a PITA!
Here's another place you may check on a replacement bolt in chrome. I haven't used them yet, but someone posted it up a while back. I've got to figure the sizes of a couple I need before ordering.
UPDATE: I was able to get the bolt out by drilling it out with a small drill bet then larger ones until I got the head to fall off. Then was able to get the collar from the luggage rack to slide off leaving just the bolt shaft exposed. Got out the biggest vise grips I had and it wasnt easy but it came off. Has anyone ever seen yellow threadlocker? Thats what was on these bolts, and they did NOT want to come off. So instead of returning xmas gifts on monday, I guess I'll be searching for new chrome bolts. If I can find the right length and thread pattern, guess I'll just get 4 so they all match. Thank you all for the suggestions. Frustrating day, but all is well now (I think). Merry Christmas to all
i just had 4 bolts seize on the fender struts, used the same technique as you, except now i will need to weld a nut onto the end of the shaft that remains....they wont budge at all..... When i replace these bolts i will use lots of copper anti seize, a 15 minute job turned into 4 hours !
