Remove Stem From Bracket
Hi All,
I'm trying to mount the Harley Springer Rake Kit provided by Vulcanworks.
http://vulcanworks.net/store_4/produ...3&cat=0&page=1
Everything is OK so far, but I'm facing a big problem from now on: remove the springer fork stem from lower brackets. The service manual doesn't help, nether the vulcanworks mounting instruction (it just says to PUSH the stem away). I'd like not to break or ruin something using some hammer or heating here and there... any official guide?
Grazie !

what model are you putting this on? I see they list the 7.5 degree kit for the Crossbones. Anyone tried this thing out? If you are putting it on a Crossbones, I really am interested to see how it works out for you.
I'm about to order the 7.5 kit for my Bones trike project. Reading the HD service manual I thought the stem would just slide out. Maybe quiz your local dealer to see if they've removed a springer front end recently. I'll keep an eye on this thread for my installation. Please keep us informed of any tips, tricks, or pitfalls you encounter. Did you take any side on pics with the stock set up for comparison?
Thx,
Scott

I've written to Vulcan and they've kindly answered:
You press the stem out by putting pressure on the top of the stem and pushing it down through the bottom tree. Sometimes you can rap it out with sharp blows with a heavy brass mallet, and, sometimes it needs to be pressed out.
I think anyways that I need also to remove the lower bearings, that, as per service manual, needs to be heated. Will try in the weekend and let you know.

The Stem does not push out unless you have a very good hydraulic press.
I ended up by cutting the stem off flush with the lower mount using an angle grinder, then drilling out the center to 13mm, which is just big enough to fit in a hacksaw blade and cut a groove in the remaining material and it then just taps out.
Prior to this I tried all sorts of heat treatment and bashing with varing sized mallets, but to no avail.
