So I had a 2009 Crossbones and got rid of it due to an injury I sustained while in Iraq. I had V&H Side Shots on it, and it was incredibly loud. It was also a 96ci. I now have a 2006 Softail Deluxe 88ci, and it came with V&H Pipes, however it isn't nearly as loud. It's also carbeurated (not sure if that makes a difference). So the question is, would new pipes make it louder? I'm looking at getting V&H True Duals, or does the 88ci really affect the sound of the pipes that much....
It affects it some. I think anyways. My 12' Fat Boy Lo with a 103 and the stock pipes seems a little louder then my 2010 Fat Bob did with it's 96. I think the styles of pipes you are talking about make a lot bigger difference then the cubic inches of the engines. The short shots are right in front of or next to the rider. The pipes in your sig pic go all the way behind the rider. Where the pipe exits probably makes the biggest difference not counting things like baffles.

Yea I can see where you are coming from, just miss the sound of my crossbones lol
Change out your baffles.. search "Harley Drag Baffles" on ebay.. there's some that are 2 inches, some that are 4, and some 8, etc.. stock V&H baffles are generally 13" long.. point is..the shorter the baffle, the louder the sound.. Soo..if you're feeling ballsy, you technically could remove the baffles from your pipes and use a hacksaw and cut the effers in half..and keep shortening them until you find a sound you like, or just go buy shorter baffles.. that'll make it louder

but I probably shouldn't take the baffles out all together should I?
Engine size will have some effect however compression is the real culprit. Those side shots on your bones were short and iirc pointed downwards, which bounce the sound right back up at you. And they are pretty short,so not much pipe to absorb sound.
Buy another pair of side shots,it will be similar sounding, unless they don't make a pair to fit your bike.
Try YouTube or ask a member who has a set you may have some interest in to send you a sound clip,or maybe V&H has sound clips.
Good luck in your search

Yea I thought of that, I just don't think the side shots would look right on the deluxe
No, don't take the baffles out completely. I don't know if you've ever actually checked out a pair of baffles ( i hadn't until I took mine out of my BSS's).. but there's really not a lot to them..it's just a piece of pipe that looks like someone took a can opener to it. I've actually got a set of "cups" for my new pipes ( a set that came off my dad's bike that i'm having coated black).. the cups were given to him by the guy who dyno tuned it and said "These are all you really need"....
they literally look like the ends of these, with the "can opener" part of the pipe sawed off..
