Throttle rockers and locks simply do not hold the speed constant. Constant speed leads to better fuel milage, and helps to avoid speeding tickets.
Very few roads or highways are flat, so going up and down hills means constant adjustment to speed, making a throttle lock useless. May as well keep your hand gripped and arrive with sore wrists.
I ride with cruise about 75% of the time, it does not lead to inattention, in fact, it increases attention, as I am not constantly looking down to the speedo to check my speed. Instead I am paying more attention to others on the road
I go on one long trip every year taking me all over the east coast I have only used the screw lock a couple times per trip only to move my right hand honestly if I were to install a traditional cruise control I doubt it would ever see much use
I used a Brakeaway Cruise Control on my Metric for a number of years before I bought my Road King. It worked very well. No slip and multiple ways to disengage it, which is great especially when it has to be done immediately.
Yes, it's not a true cruise control, but it does give your hand a rest when on a long ride.
++++ on this.
I have the SAC cruise control grips and love them.
Easy to adjust on the fly. Large adjustment can be used with thumb and finger while riding.
Cranked it down hard and you can ride no hands @ 75mph for unlimited miles and also you can back off the throttle with ease when needed.
I wont go back to regular grips ever......
