it can be buffed and polished using proper compounds and wheels. i'd recommend taking it to a buffing shop like you'd find at a plater. if you go that far you should go ahead and get it chrome plated.

I agree. If you go to the trouble of buffing it to a shine it will require polishing often to stay that way. You can buff it then have it clear coated but like he said above if you go to that much expense you can probably have it chromed for about the same money, maybe even cheaper?
You can exchange it with a beutiful chrome plated duece wheel from Chrome PROS Plating on ebay. absolutely beutiful with 2 yr. warranty !!! I put it on my 99 fxstc!
Don't despair. Get yourself a tube of 'Flitz' polish. I used it on my Deuce wheel for a couple of years. It comes up really well with it. The first time or two may take a while, but after that it's a 10 minute job every couple of weeks (depending on riding conditions).
Go to any auto parts store and get a pack of those polish pads that come inside the cans of polish. Use a soft cloth to polish it. It will come up pretty black at first, but that's the oxidation and corrosion coming off.
I spent a lot of time cleaning wheels the first year Ibought my duece. Finally said the hell with it and bought custom wheels. Best money I spent on the bike.
