Pipes wont make a difference for fuel quality needs. Its when you start adding a bunch of compression or advancing timing or adding boost. Things like that require attention to octane ratings.

Not true regarding audible pinging. If the motor is tuned/compression ratio for premium, it will get better mileage than using 87 and make more power.

Not only do our bikes not have sophisticated knock sensors, if you can actually hear it ping over the exhaust, you've got issues.

Doesn't mean he can't use 87, but there are factors where 91+ is an advantage.

I run 87 all winter, and then go to 89 in the summer. Engine runs a little hotter in summer, and the higher octane helps to keep it from pinging.

Thanks for the replies, Gettin hammered with snow here tonight hopefully wont be to long I can get her out and try some 87 to see if ill be fine for the trip!
