I am getting ready to mount my side license plate and I am going to wire 2 led bolt lights to it to keep it legal. So I am wondering what/where I should wire to red and black wires from the led lights to?
When I was running a side plate, I wired the LED bolts to the wires that feed the rear running light. I just used wire taps. I used 4 LED bolts on the plate, so I first wired them all together, shrink wrapped, then only ran one red and black to the taps. All black shrink wrap, then black zip tied to the swing arm and tucked up under the seat and over to the taps on the right side of the under seat area.
Without a wiring diagram in front of me I can't really help you out with what color goes where. I can tell you that I would get a test light and probe wires to figure out which one is a running light wire and tap into that with the positive and find a ground wire for the negative.
Yeah, we can't tell you unless we have the same vintage bike. My '10 has a harness that feeds the rear run/turn/brake. Using my factory service manual I identified the hot wire that feeds the running light and a ground. Do as Mike suggested or buy an FSM, they are worth their weight in gold.
Again, this is a schematic from a '10 softail so don't take it as gospel.
This harness 'might' be under your seat on the right:
Note the circled tap points.
This is how it runs to the rear light:
You don't need the fuse thing you posted. Just 2 taps, one for the running light wire, and one for the ground. A basic understanding of how wiring works also helps. One last time, those diagrams are for a '10 softail. I seriously doubt you bike is the same, but it should be similar. Buy a factory service manual and you'll know for sure.
You can find at any local auto parts store, they usually come in a pack of 4-5 for a few bucks.
Why would you ever use a scotch clip? they are the worst thing ever invented. for the number of times I have had to fix wiring after someone has used them. they puncture the casing of the wire enabling moisture, road salt, and grime to enter the wire. I wouldn't even tell some one to use those in the dash of a cager. Do it right solder and shrink tube. And dont take a test light and go poking wires, does the same thing.
