Need Help!
Hey everyone,
I need some help figuring this out. Is is possible to put on Vance and Hines Short Shot pipes on a 2009 FXSTSSE3 that has the stock heavy breather and not have a SERT put on. If so what kind of performance issues will there be. I just had my bike delivered and asked the guy who delivered where the tuner is and he said the dealer didn't give him anything. Tried to call the dealer and they have not returned my call. When I was looking at this bike before I bought it I asked if there was a SERT done and was told yes. I am stating to think they pulled a fast one on me. I took it out for a quick ride today(it's only 40 out so it was cold) and I noticed when I slowed down a couple of times I heard a little pop. I never had this issue with my 2006 Dyna that had a SERT on it. Is there a way to look on the bike to tell if there was anything done to it. Thanks in advance..

No, Your computer will slowly try to make compensations. A small pop on deceleration is not really that big of a problem. You need to figure out what you want on your bike and then go after a tuner. The popping means you have a little too much air. The dealer will try to sell you a 500$ tuner. Check your plugs to make sure you are not running hot. Even if your bike has a tuner, it won't make much of a difference without a good mechanic.
Thanks for replying. I am still trying to figure this all out. Hopefully I will be able to talk to the dealer today and get this figured out. I will post when I get some new info. Thanks again
Without actually looking at the MAP loaded into the ECM there is no outward way to tell what if anything has been done to it.
But if its only popping a little on decel its a good bet that it has had at least the dealers standard stage one update loaded into it.
Doing that much would be almost mandatory when installing a Big Sucker.
If it really did have a SERT put on it, you should try to find out what happened to it.
Because once used they become 'married' to the serial number of the bike it was used on and are worthless to anyone else.

Just like car dealers the software in his diagnostic system is really just a more elaborate version of a SERT that's not 'keyed' to any one bike.
.
As far as performance goes I think you may find it pops a bit more on decel with new pipes until the ECM recalibrate's itself, but that's about it.
As always you should keep a close eye on the plugs for any sign of it going too lean and do whatever you have to to fix it.
Just got a call from the dealership and they are coming to pick it up today and take a look at it. I will see what they say and do. Hopefully they agree with me and work with me and add what needs to be added to make this run better. Will update when I hear back.

So if nothing has been done to this bike I should be asking for a Stage 1 and SERT? And if only a stage 1 has been done than I should ask for the SERT? Thanks again for all the input.
