Just bought my first fuel injected bike (up to an '08 Night Train from a '97 Sportster) so have a question regarding slip-on exhaust..... The bike is way too quiet for me right now, so I'm looking to do this for sound factor alone. I'm not concerned about the performance aspect of it right now, just a clean sound.
- Can I slide on a set of slip-on pipes without changing anything else without screwing up the bike?
There seems to be a lot of mixed guidance on this. Some say you need a download, some say you need a new air cleaner, etc., and some say you have to do nothing at all and it's safe.
So..... Is it safe to just add new pipes or do I need to do more?
Thanks!

as long as the only thing you are doing is either the intake, or slip ons, no download is needed. if you do both you will need a power commander, of a download from the stealership
Your 08 is probably running very lean and hot from the factory. Adding a tuner will correct the air/fuel ratio, decrease engine heat, and add life to your engine. They are great for making more power too, especially if you have any other mods in your future.
My 2011 FXDB was also too quiet... I had a few close calls with cars and trucks not hearing me next to them as they changed lanes. So I put VH slip-ons and nothing else... runs fine... in fact getting more torque (I can cruise at 50 MPH in 6th gear) and better gas mileage (45 Fwy MPG and 32 City MPG).
