I was able to get my ECM info on the screen and when I go to save it I get prompted for a file name and vehicle info. I hit OK after filling in all the blanks and the save progresses to about 50% and then the error appears: sometimes it's "502 ECM is quitting" and sometimes it's "504 uploading ECM quitting".
I checked all the connections and tried again with same result. The manual says it will do this if the ECM comm. bus has corrupted data from a PC or other add-ons like guages etc. The only thing I've added to this bike (beside a bunch of chrome, cams and fatcat) is a smart siren.
I really don't want to download a new calibration without having my stock settings backed up.
Not that this helps you but I thought I would shed some light on the USB to Serial adapter issues..
There are different types of Chipsets used inside these adapters. The ones with FTDI chipsets seem to be the ones that work.
The ones with the Prolific chipset usually do not work. They are considered a cheap version which is why you see varying pricing on all these adapters.
You can usually see which one you have by looking at the Device Driver info in Device Manager.
It seems Belkin uses FTDI but I can't confirm that all their adapters do. Maybe some of the older ones do not...

Thanks, Mike. You've probably helped a lot.
It is indeed a Prolific driver. I paid over $50 for this cable so I didn't think it was a cheapy but I'm pretty sure I now know what the problem is.
