I was able to get my ECM info on the screen and when I go to save it I get prompted for a file name and vehicle info. I hit OK after filling in all the blanks and the save progresses to about 50% and then the error appears: sometimes it's "502 ECM is quitting" and sometimes it's "504 uploading ECM quitting".
I checked all the connections and tried again with same result. The manual says it will do this if the ECM comm. bus has corrupted data from a PC or other add-ons like guages etc. The only thing I've added to this bike (beside a bunch of chrome, cams and fatcat) is a smart siren.
I really don't want to download a new calibration without having my stock settings backed up.
First you need to do a save or restore under the file menu. Make certain you have your comm port set up in the programming screen. Saving your factory calibration is a must because HD's system will not read the TTS file. The 502 and 504 error codes are generated when you try to us a aftermarket USB cable instead of the TTS cable.
Yeah that's what I'm trying to do: save the factory settings under the save or restore menu. Comm port is open and seems to work fine. I even tried another comm port.
The VIN and ECM PN etc all come in fine. After the I enter the file name to save, the upload progresses about half way and then the error message appears.
I think you're right: it's the serial to USB cable. Its not a cheapy by any stretch but its not the TTS one either.
The dealer told me it would work but...
Thanks.

You can't use just any cable. I image some others will work, but you'll probably spend more trying to find one than just buying a TTS cable.
