Thank you all for your replies. While merely an infant in the world of HD if I can help in any way. I'm here..... If there are any Devidogs out there Semper Fi my brothers and thank you for your service!
My 90 fatboy is the most reliable trouble free vehicle I have ever owned, hands down. I put over 10.000 miles a year on it, tires, oil changes, brakes, that all I do to it. Once there assembled properly, there bulletproof, if a hacker try's to maintain it, the problems of neglect, and improper service and mods, can catch up, to a new owner.
All right, cut a brother some slack. Of course the bike came with a chain. When I posted this, I was somewhat depressed. Going to doc's today to get the service manual. It is a two owner bike, the second owner bought her with just over 2K on the odometer. Put eight on it and did a rebuild from the frame up. She's an oldgal but stout.
No way it came factory with a chain, if it is a 90 fatboy. Its been poorly hacked, or poorly molded with older Harley parts, or its an older Harley, someone rebuilt with a 90 frame and ownership.
If it has a chain no wonder you're having problems with it. Like others have said, its a '90 model. Just do what you got to do to fix it. If you would have bought a newer ride, I could see your comments about HDs. It did sound like a typical metric bike owner comment though, we'll get that out of you here....good luck with it and keep us posted. I am sure that you will be able to get all the info you need here to get it right.
That's the original Fatboy. Get a service manual and get it back as close to stock as possible. If there are any collectible Harleys, that should be one.
Spoke to the previous owner and, he has agreed to allow me to run the bike to his house. We will spend an entire weekend making it right. Should be fun.
Liking those bullet signal lightsyou have on your bike. Who makes them?
Maintenance? I love my Fay Boy. I also love my '79 Honda CBX. Six cylinders, dual overhead cams, 24 valves, 6 carburetors and 6 megaphone exhaust pipes. Wanna talk about maintenance? My 2004 Fat Boy is practically maintenance free and gets great gas mileage to boot.
Sounds to me like the mechanic that "rebuilt" your FB left a few loose ends. Get those squared away and you won't have any problems with your classic Fat Boy.
